Chaves County will soon be making renovations to its detention center.
"We have been planning for this. We have known for a long time we were going to have to expand the detention center,” says County Manager Stanton Riggs.
The New Mexico Finance Authority is loaning the county five-million dollars for the upgrades.
It is a fifteen million dollar project. Ten million will be privately funded by the county. The jail currently holds about two- hundred and seventy-five inmates on a daily basis.
Riggs says, “That number will jump up to probably around two-hundred or so more inmates that we can hold safely."
The renovations will include additions to the female population area, a larger secure entryway, and an improved medical wing.
According to Riggs, "We are going to primarily focus on our higher secured level individuals out there."
The county will start bidding for a contractor next month.
