RUIDOSO DOWNS, N.M. (AP) - Officials at southern New Mexico's Ruidoso Downs Race Track say preparations are complete for the summer season.
Horses will start training Friday. Racing begins May 24.
The season will conclude Labor Day with Ruidoso Downs' prestigious $2.6 million All American Futurity, one of the world's richest quarter horse races.
The $2.8 million All American Derby will be run the day before. Track officials say it's the largest purse ever offered in quarter horse racing.
Track majority owner R.D. Hubbard has said he'll crack down this season on trainers whose horses test positive for certain drugs.
Last year, a New York Times investigation highlighted an industry mired in a culture of drugs and lax regulation as well as a disturbing fatal breakdown rate among horses.
The report described New Mexico as having the worst horse safety record in the nation.
