Bernalillo County's summer programs for kids are filling up fast.

"We will reach capacity probably at every one of our centers," Parks and Recreation Director Ed Chismar said, "and at Paradise Hills Community Center it is so popular that they've had to go to a lottery system to select those that can participate."

The programs offer an affordable way for parents to keep their kids safe and busy during the summer months, with the basic program from 9am-3pm costing $100/child. The county picks up a big part of the tab to make the programs possible. They say the programs can make a big difference for kids.

"It's important kids feel good about themselves so we feel we're a nontraditional classroom," Chismar said. "Some of our curriculum involves self esteem. And being part of a group, and part of the group process."

To register, visit the Bernalillo County website for info on available locations. Sign your child up in person through Parks and Recreation at 111 Union Square Street between 8am and 4:30pm.
