The Shiprock Marathon - a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon - is this weekend and organizers are working to make it a safe one.
"Along our course it's a little remote, as you know, so a lot of folks do gather in Shiprock so we're going to have a little more presence of the (police department) and the rangers," organizer Tom Riggenbach said.
Riggenbach ran the Boston Marathon. He had finished running and was on his way to the airport when he got word of the bombing.
"Everybody was getting the news and all kind of had that same stunned feeling i guess that I did like 'wow, we were just there,’” he said.
Heading into the Shiprock Marathon Riggenbach said he wants runners to know he's trying to make it as safe as possible. He says they're significantly increasing security.
The race ends at Dine college, and Riggenbach says most of the security will be posted at the finish line."
And there's going to be more medical staff.
"Doctors in several locations along the course and in a finish line tent that's top notch," Riggenbach said.
What happened in Boston is tragic, but runners, including here in Shiprock, are determined to remain resilient.
