The American Urological Association rescinds prior statements saying prostate screenings aren’t necessary for men in certain age groups.
A government advisory committee said in 2011 that healthy men should not be screened due to possible health risks.
But the Urological Association strongly continued to defend the benefits of screening, until now.
The association released new guidelines Friday saying routine screenings are no longer needed for men between the ages of 40 and 54, or 70 and up.
The group says the screenings may only be beneficial for men aged 55 to 69.
