Three New Mexico State Parks are vying for participation in the national BoatUS Life Jacket Loaner Program.  Elephant Butte Lake, Eagle Nest Lake and Caballo Lake State Parks are participating in the national contest to receive loaner life jackets for kids.  Visitors can vote for their favorite park until May 12 and if selected, one of these parks will be able to provide loaner life jackets for kids.

This program allows a park to loan lifejackets to children who do not have the equipment - allowing children to be safe and participate in a fun day on the water.

"Any of the three State Parks participating in the contest would be excellent candidates for this program," said Toby Velasquez, Chief of the State Parks Law Enforcement & Boating Safety Bureau.  "Every parent wants to make sure that their children are safe on the water and this is an excellent opportunity to support our visitors."

All motorboat personal watercraft and sailboat operators born on or after January 1, 1989, must complete a boating safety course. (This means operators 24 years of age or younger, and even those 13 years and younger being supervised by an adult on board.)

State Park officials remind boaters to always wear a lifejacket when out on the water and to be aware of weather conditions.
