A New Mexico woman, who was shot and killed in Virginia, was in the middle of a divorce. Now her husband, FBI agent, Arthur Gonzales, is charged with her murder.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 learned just weeks before her death, Gonzales served her divorce papers.

The victim, Julie Serna-Gonzales, was from Socorro.

The couple’s sons, 10 and 12, are without a mother and now their father is in custody. A close family friend told KOB Julie’s family is seeking full custody of those boys. They want them back in New Mexico.

Donna, who’s been friends with Julie for over 30 years, has been in constant communication with the boys. She said they’re confused and heartbroken. Right now, the boys are with Arthur’s parents.

Donna told KOB the couple was having problems. She described Arthur as a controlling husband. “He was very, almost cruel to her. The way he spoke to her and just by his actions. The way he talked to her and told her she had to this or that so that was pretty much the relationship,” said Donna.

The couple was living in Las Cruces before moving to Virginia for Arthur’s job.

Donna told KOB the family has set up a fund for the boys. Click on 4Links.
