The cheese in your enchilada probably comes from Wisconsin, even though New Mexico is one of the nation’s leading dairy states. The tomato on your salad might come from Mexico.
A group of New Mexico food fans wants to make it easier for all of us to find locally grown and produced food in local restaurants and markets. It’s called Delicious New Mexico, and it’s dedicated to putting New Mexico produce and food products on more restaurant tables and grocery shelves.
South Valley organic farmer Monte Skarsgard is a member.
“It’s grown locally and it’s consumed locally,” Skarsgard said. “That’s what we want to see. I’d like to see our crops start to get into diverse marketplaces, get into more socioeconomic backgrounds.”
That’s Vicki Pozzebon’s job. She heads Delicious New Mexico.
“It is a trend nationally,” Pozzebon said. “Across the country people want to purchase more locally. They want to support their local farmer, their farmers market, the local food producers who are making all the great products.”
Yep, it sounds idealistic, but it’s also business.
“You can grow a radish, but you’ve got to be able to sell that radish or is it even worth growing it,” Skarsgard said. “Delicious New Mexico is doing a great job of trying to give the brand, the New Mexico brand, a face of the New Mexicans who are behind the products.”
Delicious New Mexico has a big, free event coming up June 2 – Savor the Flavor – a big food show at the Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe.
