SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (AP) - Fire crews are reportedly making progress battling brush fires that have burned several structures in southern New Mexico along the Texas state line.
Dona Ana County sheriff's spokeswoman Kelly Jameson says the fires are in a mostly rural area of the county near Santa Teresa and Sunland Park.
According to Jameson, the structures burned included at least one home but that there are no reports of injuries. However, she says several firefighters in Texas were treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation.
Jameson says the first fire was reported late Monday afternoon on a river levee near a school and that high winds caused the fire to spread.
The cause of the fire isn't known and no estimate is immediately available on the size of the fire.
