A shocking confession was caught on dash cam video and in police interrogation audio after a high speed chase in Belen.
New Mexico State Police said two women killed a man and stuffed his body into a trunk. A grand jury has indicted suspected murderers, Jennifer McKee and Ashlee Gurule. Police said they planned a grisly murder for a man’s car.
Hours after a high speed chase ended in Belen, we hear of a shocking confession from one of the women in the car.
"We both pre-planned it but it was like I didn't think we were going to do it,” said Ashlee Gurule to investigators. “Honestly I thought I was going to back down like right away, but I didn't."
In the audio recording obtained by KOB-TV, the 20-year-old admits to investigators she and 18-year-old Jennifer McKee carried out a murder.
"We were just planning to like do it, get it over with, clean up and then like burn whatever we touched," she said.
Gurule goes on to say the women offered Maurice Gonzales a threesome at his house on May 3 rd. That’s when police say both women admitted to stabbing the 51-year-old to death.
Gurule told investigators the women were upset Gonzales, who’s paid McKee for sex before, pulled a knife on McKee and kicked the women out of his house days before.
The women are accused of stuffing his body in his car’s trunk and driving to a remote place to burn it.
Dash cam video captures the moments New Mexico State Police tried stopping the silver car the women were driving for going too slow on I-25. That led to the high speed chase and a state police officer shooting at the suspects.
"All units be advised shots fired, shots fired," said a dispatcher.
The chase weaved throughout Belen, ending on Main Street. After reading her her Miranda rights, a state officer asks McKee what’s in the car.
"What is it,” he asked.
“Um, there's a dead body,” said McKee.
“Where,” the officer asked.
“In the trunk,” she said.
Officers quickly moved other officers back from the scene to investigate. It was at that point the case turned into a murder investigation.
McKee and Gurule will be arraigned in District Court. A date hasn’t been set and both are in jail on a one million dollar, cash only bond.
A 16 year old female was also arrested for allegedly taking part in the crime. She is in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center.
