Lisa and Jami Chavez's daughter, Breann was only three when they lost her to Neimann-Pick disease.
"The cholesterol doesn't break down instead it stores in the larger organs like the liver and spleen and ultimately the brain so there's a neurological breakdown," said Lisa Chavez.
After Breann's death, her parents teamed up with Wines of the San Juan to form Ducks for Bucks a charity to help families with children that suffer from the same disease.
Saturday is their annual fundraiser at Wines of the San Juan near Bloomfield from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The duck theme comes from Breann's love for the birds.
"We would sit at the pond and she's feed her ducks and we always had ducks in her life," said Lisa Chavez.
The biggest event is the Dainty Duck Dash. For $5 you can buy a duck and on the day of the event. The ducks are then dropped into the ditch and race to the finish line. The winning duck gets $1,000.
Since forming the charity, Ducks for Bucks has raised more than $100,000. The money goes to help pay for expenses that aren't necessarily covered by insurance.
"If we can help families get through the day, make their life a little better as others did for us, we just want to return it," said Jami Chavez.
Anyone interested in buying a duck doesn’t have to be present at the event. Ducks can be bought online at the organization's website.
