Free summer meal programs kicked off across New Mexico today.
Any child can get a free lunch and some places are even offering breakfast. No registration is required. They’re served on a first come first serve basis. Today we checked out day one for Bernalillo County.
There are 55 different locations around Bernalillo County, that doesn't include the 180 sites where the City of Albuquerque is also serving. Parents like Leila Bergman appreciate it.
"It's great for families who have multiple children, who can't afford maybe to go out every day and buy lunches,” she said. “So it really helps a lot.”
That's the program's goal. To help to make sure kids are getting fed a nutritious lunch while school is out. Locations were chosen in areas where they see the biggest need during the school year. Denise Holmgren said that her girls actually really like the lunches.
"It's definitely an awesome thing. My girls look forward to it every summer,” she said. “I tell friends about it and they provide good meals and it's really nice to have the chance to come out here and just play in the parks."
Parents we spoke with said one of the greatest challenges they face each summer is keeping their kids active. This program does that. It gets kids out to pools, parks and community centers. Holmgren said it's nice to have one less thing to have to pack.
"It's nice to have the option to not have to pack up lunches every day and just worry about getting them here to fun," she said. "So it is nice to relax and not worry about lunches sometimes."
