PECOS, N.M. (AP) - Nearly 1,000 firefighters and other personnel welcome Mother Nature providing them some breathing room as they battle the Tres Lagunas fire in northern New Mexico.

The fire has burned 16 square miles of rugged forest in the Santa Fe National Forest north of Pecos and east of Santa Fe. It started May 30 due to a downed power line.

Fire management team spokesman Dick Fleishman says containment is at 34 percent and that milder weather with higher humidity dampened fire activity Thursday. He says that enabled firefighters to clear fuel and to establish lines right up against the fire in some areas.

However, warmer weather is expected this weekend, so Fleishman says firefighters will be trying to make as much progress as possible Friday in containing the fire.
