New Mexico Highway 4 is closed as crews battle the Thompson Ridge Fire in the Valles Caldera.
Highway 4 is closed from NM Highway 126 to NM Highway 501, however residents in the area will be able to access their homes with identification to verify their permanent home.
In nine days the Thompson Ridge Fire has burned more than 20,000 acres in the Jemez Mountain area. It was started by downed power lines in the area north of Jemez Springs.
It is 40 percent contained at last report this morning.
Overnight a spot fire was discovered outside the containment line and some crews began burnout operations near the Valles Caldera main gate and along Valles Caldera Road 01.
Heavy smoke will be visible from the area due to higher temperatures.
