ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Federal authorities say seven people are in custody after a multi-agency investigation targeting heroin traffickers operating in Albuquerque.
Friday's arrests are the result of a 15-month investigation by the DEA, Albuquerque police and Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office.
Executed search warrants netted three pounds of heroin, a handgun and about $10,000 in cash plus seven vehicles.
Authorities say Albuquerque's Northeast Height area has experienced a growing, widespread heroin abuse problem among teens and young adults in recent years.
The investigation was code-named "Balloon Fiesta" - a reference to the multi-colored balloons that heroin often is packaged in for distribution.
Five of the people arrested are charged with conspiracy to distribute heroin in an indictment unsealed Friday.
Two others are charged in criminal complaints alleging possession of heroin with intent to distribute.
