A disabled amputee is in custody Monday night after allegedly fracturing a 3-year-old boy's skull with a hammer at a grocery store.

The bizarre attack happened Monday shortly after 1 p.m. at a Smith’s Food and Drug store near Golf Course and McMahon.

Witnesses describe hearing screams as a disheveled amputee in a wheelchair allegedly struck a 3-year-old boy in the head with a hammer.

Police believe the suspect picked up the hammer from another aisle.

According to witnesses the suspect then tried to go after two other children under the age of five with the hammer but the child’s father jumped on the suspect and wrestled the hammer away.

A witness tells KOB it took several men to pull the father off the suspect.

Police said he was watching cartoons when they went to check on him earlier.

Detectives say the suspect is being extremely uncooperative and has refused to share his identity.

He will be transported to the Bernalillo County Detention Center where he will undergo a mental evaluation.
