People living in one Albuquerque neighborhood say an excruciating odor has been wafting from nearby sewers, and they want a fix.
The Albuquerque Water Authority has been sending out crews to check out the problem, but people smelling the odor think there might be even more at play.
For Leslie Reilly, the smell is unmistakable.
“It smells like the sewer,” Reilly said. “It smells like feces.”
She says over the past three years, she’s noticed the smell where she works and lives near 98th and Central often, but lately it’s been nonstop.
“You try to breathe through your mouth,” Reilly said. “But it’s like, you don’t want to taste that smell either.”
Reilly filed reports with the water authority using their online form, and they sent out crews.
“We did some extra cleaning out there last week,” spokesperson David Morris said. “We’re hoping that’s going to clear it out. If not, we’ll go out and take another look at it. There might be some mechanical issues there with the system that we can address.”
Morris says crews have been busy lately. Heat makes smells worse, so they’ve been getting five to six complaints each day about the stink seeping from pipes that lead to the South Side Treatment Plant.
Morris says they want people to report odors, but they ask for patience.
Reilly says she’s not trying to make a stink about the water authority.
“They are trying and they’ve been very cooperative and informative with me,” Reilly said. “I just feel like they’re running out of ideas, and the smell’s still there.”
She just wants to see if anything else could be going on, and if someone can sniff out the cause.
