An abandoned bear cub is recovering in a wildlife facility after firefighters working the south side of the Thompson Ridge Fire came to his rescue.
The firefighters first spotted the bear in the Valles Caldera National Preserve on Saturday. The crew remained in their vehicle and observed the cub for a while, but when the mother bear never showed up, they put apples near the cub's reach before leaving.
When they found the cub alone the next day, the firefighters called the New Mexico Game and Fish Department for help. The cub was taken to an Espanola wildlife rehabilitation facility to be raised and released when he can fend for himself.
