Bernalillo County's new minimum wage law takes effect Monday.

Under the law, employees currently making $7.50 per hour will get a 50 cent per hour increase. Another similar increase is planned for Jan. 1, 2014, boosting the minimum wage to $8.50 per hour.

The Bernalillo County Commission passed the new minimum wage ordinance by a 3-to-2 vote on April 23.

The law applies to about 1,900 businesses and thousands of workers in the unincorporated areas of Bernalillo County – areas that are located outside Albuquerque’s city limits.

"This ordinance also makes the wages consistent with what voters in the City of Albuquerque approved by an overwhelming margin last year," District 2 Commissioner Art De La Cruz said.
