The picture says so much. It’s too much to make out his face in the smoke. He’s carrying a chain saw and he’s fighting the Thompson Ridge fire in New Mexico, protecting parts of the Jemez.
The caption says he belongs to the Granite Mountain Hotshots, the same crew the lost 19 members Sunday while they tried to protect to community of Yarnell.
Residents say protecting people’s communities is what they did, and residents of Prescott are remembering their names.
Crew members like Kevin Woyjeck, a 21-year-old who wanted to grow up to be a firefighter like his dad, a captain of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Crew members like Bill Warnke, a 25-year-old who was soon to be a father himself. He and his wife were expecting a child in December.
These are just two of 19 lives cut short in the dangerous work of trying to protect others from destruction.
