Sequestration furloughs finally took hold Monday, affecting 2,100 defense department civilian employees at Kirtland Air Force Base.
These employees are now required to take one day off a week for 11 weeks.
In total, 600,000 defense department civilian employees across the country will be forced to take days off without pay as part of sequestration furloughs announced back in March.
Colonel Jeff Lanning with Kirtland Airforce Base told KOB Eyewitness News 4 that these employees will get about a 20 percent reduction in pay.
"It's not something anybody thinks is a good idea," Colonel Lanning said. "It's something that we need to do in order to meet the requirements of sequestration."
The furlough days mean about an $8 million payroll impact a year for the employees at Kirtland.
