TAOS, N.M. -- One person is dead and another injured after a plane crash at Taos Regional Airport on Wednesday morning.

According to Town of Taos Police Chief Ken Koch, the two pilots were conducting training exercises around 11 a.m. when their small plane crashed on airport property.

Chief Koch described both pilots as "experienced."

FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford said the plane was a single-engine, light-sport aircraft. Preliminary investigation shows the plane crashed 200 feet short of the runway.

Taos police have not released the names of the two pilots, but records show John Hillyard of Ranchos de Taos as the registered owner of the plane.

NTSB and FAA investigators are on their way to the scene.

Lunsford said the crash will not affect other flights at Taos Regional Airport.
