TAOS COUNTY -- State search and rescue crews saved a group of lost hikers, including eight foster children, in the mountains north of Questa early Friday.
The hikers called for help after getting caught in a rain storm in the Cabresto Lake area around 1 a.m. Thursday.
State police made contact with one of the hikers, a woman suffering from hypothermia and a broken ankle, and sent a second rescue crew to bring the children down from the mountain. Excluding the adults, the ages of the children range between 14 and 20 years of age.
Tough terrain made the mission difficult overnight, but according to Sgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez of the New Mexico State Police, crews found the hikers about four and a half miles north of the lake in the forest.
All hikers were assessed by EMS and released. The woman with a broken ankle was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Taos.
