The bear was tranquilized around 9 a.m.
Residents of a southwest Albuquerque apartment complex say they're shocked to learn a female bear found in their backyard on Wednesday traveled all the way from the East Mountains.
This wasn't her first trip to the city, either.
A woman first spotted the bear outside her window near Central and 98th.
"He was just laying there sleeping," Virginia Tafoya said. "He looked kind of sad and I kind of tapped the window a little bit. I wasn't sure if I should do that, but I did, and he looked right up at me."
Officers at the scene said the bear appeared to be "relaxing" between the buildings, but that they quickly surrounded the area after observing her climbing fast over fences.
New Mexico Game and Fish officials tranquilized the bear around 9 a.m. After checking her tag, they were surprised to learn the bear was from the East Mountains and that she'd been in caught in the city once before.
Officials plan to relocate the bear somewhere in northern New Mexico.
