APS students still have about week left of summer vacation, but teachers and staff are heading back Tuesday.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 sat down with APS to talk about teacher hirings and class sizes.
Karen Rudys is with the district's human resources department. She said APS hired about 1,000 teachers for the new school year. That brings the total number of teachers throughout the district to 7,288.
But even with the new hires, Rudys said they always have a certain department that they always have hard time filling, and it's not only at APS, but nationwide.
"Special ed, specific classes like autism classes, emotionally disturbed classes and B.I.P. classes. We're also having a difficult time filling math positions at secondary as well as bilingual positions at elementary," said Rudys.
Class sizes are pretty much staying the same and are different for each grade level. For kindergartners, on average, it will be about 22 kids; first grade through third, 21.
