A district court hearing in Albuquerque Monday paved the way for marriage licenses for same-sex couples in Bernalillo County.
The hearing centered around a Santa Fe County couple who filed an emergency motion for a marriage license last week.
The couple filed the lawsuit to ensure that Neuman and their children would receive Roper's benefits if she were to pass away. Roper has life-threatening brain cancer.
In anticipation of the judge's ruling, the Bernalillo County Clerk's Office printed around 1,000 marriage licenses that could be issued to same-sex couples. The difference? The new licenses say, "spouse and spouse." The old licenses read, "bride and groom."
The new licenses will be issued beginning Tuesday at 8 a.m.
