Valencia County is now the sixth county in New Mexico to start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
The county clerk started issuing the gender-neutral licenses at noon. She announced her decision to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples yesterday—exactly one week after Doña Ana County became the first county to issue these licenses.
In fact, KOB Eyewitness News 4 learned that Valencia County Clerk Peggy Carabajal called Doña Ana County for consultation on the decision.
"We're not going to discriminate against anyone," Carabajal said.
Only two licenses have been issued so far, but the clerk's office is opened until 5 p.m. and they expect more people to come in.
