Moviegoers in Albuquerque will soon have a whole new view, at an old mall, as developers hope to open a new IMAX theater by mid-November.
The news came at a routine meeting between Goodman Realty and city leaders on Thursday. The company oversees the redevelopment of Winrock Town Center.
Construction delays due to a troubled economy have left much of the complex vacant for years.
“It’s just sad! It’s not being used,” shopper Lisa Overmyer said.
“It’s probably falling apart and becoming a bigger eyesore for everybody else around here,” shopper Mariah Wilson said.
Wilson and Overmyer remember the old days at Winrock. They referred to it as a high-end mall.
In addition to the IMAX theater, Dave & Buster's will open a location at Winrock by next spring.
Darin Sand with Goodman Realty offered the city officials – who sit on the Winrock Town Center Tax Increment Development Districts Board – as much detail about the project as he could, but said there are still a lot of unknowns. However, he believes the two upcoming additions will draw more interest from retailers.
“We're very optimistic of what's going on. We have 9 leases right now in various stages of negotiation. And moving through permitting, city process with these other buildings,” Sand said.
City leaders said that homeowners near Winrock are concerned about more traffic. Sand said his team is aware of the concern and will work with the city to figure out an appropriate plan well in advance.
