SHIPROCK, N.M. -- In less than three weeks, a resolution surrounding the purchase of a coal mine will go up before Shiprock Chapter members.
According to the Farmington Daily Times, environmental group Diné CARE is asking the Navajo Nation to not buy the coal mine. The proposed resolution asks for the tribe to shift toward renewable energy.
But the newspaper reports that the tribe could preserve 800 jobs if they decide to purchase the mine.
Navajo Mine, located about 19 miles southwest of Farmington in Fruitland, is the only coal supplier to the Four Corners power plant.
