Exercise & Diet for Prevention of Breast Cancer

Did you know that a good diet and exercise plan may help lower your risk for breast cancer?

Regular exercise can lower hormone levels and help you maintain a healthier weight, which might help reduce your risk for breast cancer. Exercise also helps your body fight obesity, which can decrease your risk for breast cancer. Finally, exercise helps your immune system attack tumors.

Aim for at least 45 minutes of physical activity – such as walking, jogging or strength training – at least five days a week. Choose an activity you enjoy, because you will be more likely to stick with your new exercise routine.

Your diet also plays a significant role in your body’s fight to keep you healthy. While no food can prevent cancer, a healthy diet can keep your body and immune system strong. Try to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Avoid foods that are high in fat, trans fat and sugar. Finally, consume lots of calcium, which can be found in a variety of foods, including yogurt, spinach and fortified juices.

You depend on your immune system, so give it the tools it needs – such as diet and exercise – to keep you healthy.
