State’s sports hall of fame looks for new members
It’s never too early, although it can be too late, to nominate athletes for the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame.
Originally known as the Albuquerque Sports Hall of Fame, which then morphed into the Albuquerque/New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame, today it’s merely the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame – and seeking nominees from throughout the Land of Enchantment for enshrinement at the 2014 annual banquet, set for Sunday, Feb. 23, at the Marriott Pyramid in Albuquerque.
Earlier this year, former Lobos and pro athletes Brian Urlacher (from Lovington) and Kenny Thomas (Albuquerque), plus long-time metro area high school coaches Reed and Carol Barnitz were enshrined as members of the Class of 2012.
One year earlier, Guy Wimberly (Socorro), John Lomasney (Gallup) and L.G. and Cooper Henderson (Artesia) were inducted as the Class of 2012; beyond the metro area was represented in 2011, too, when longtime track and cross country coach Curtis Williams (Gallup), plus Jim Ciccarello (Albuquerque) and Rocky Long (UNM) went in.
Nominations will be reviewed and voted upon in November, so this is a good time to submit your choices for the Class of 2013. Nominating forms are due Oct. 1.
