While many national parks are closed because of the federal government shutdown, two New Mexico state parks will soon be open to visitors.

State park officials said Brantley and Storrie lakes will open for boating on Friday.

Storrie Lake had been closed since 2011 because of low water levels and Brantley Lake was temporarily closed this summer due to flooding events on the Pecos River Watershed. But thanks to significant rainfall, water levels have rebounded for both of the lakes.

"It's great to have the water levels back for visitors to enjoy safely," State Parks director Tommy Mutz said.  "Come out and visit the lakes, we're excited to have folks out on the water this autumn."

Brantley Lake State Park is located just north of Carlsbad. Storrie Lake State Park is located near historic Las Vegas and offers great opportunities for boating, fishing, paddling, and windsurfing.
