UNM’s Pit is getting some renovations, but not aesthetic ones. In the past year, a couple dozen tiles have fallen from the walls so they want to make sure the whole building is safe.
No one has been hurt by the falling tiles, but they were alarming to fans. Crews spent Thursday working to make sure the tiles near entrances were secure and safe. There was a problem with how they’d been fastened originally. The University investigated the problem late last year and put up banners to cover them early this year, but this will be a permanent fix.
“We were concerned about our patrons, about our fans, and we posed the challenge to our design and contracting team to remediate it,’ University Architect Robert Doran said. “There was no change in the aesthetic of the design-they just did a few things in terms of the connection to the fastening of the tile.”
The University says they’ll have the crucial spots finished before Lobo Howl Friday, which ESPNU will be broadcasting. There will still be some outside tiles they’ll have to fix later on.
