KOB Eyewitness News 4 was in Santa Fe early Wednesday morning as same-sex couples started to gather outside the Supreme Court Building.
A couple of hours before the hearing started, about 30 people were outside the court building and the first person in line was Karen Schmiege. Back in August, KOB was there with Karen and her spouse, Pat Catlett, as they were the first people to get married in Bernalillo County.
On Wednesday, Karen waited in line as the state Supreme Court moved a step closer to deciding whether gay marriage is legal in New Mexico. "It feels like a bounding ball but we're patient and we keep working and working and it will happen," said Schmiege.
After listening to two hours of arguments, Karen said she has no idea which way the justices will go. "The justices actually have a lot of work to do and that, that makes it, I have more of a respect for their position," added Karen.
So now the waiting game continues but Karen's fight, she said, keeps going.
