For the second time in three days, Albuquerque Police responded to the same chilling call: Man walking down the street with a gun.

No law enforcement officers were hurt in the latest incident Monday afternoon.

The suspect is in the hospital after being shot by an APD officer.

Central Avenue re-opened at about 9 p.m.

It is not clear if the suspect fired his gun, but witnesses say they heard at least seven gunshots.

The incident started at 4:45 p.m. on Central and Washington. Police say someone called police saying a man had crashed a silver Honda car into a pole. The person then told dispatch the man got out of the car with a handgun.

"The driver walks up Central, eastbound, approaches a bus stop, points a gun at a woman and a child and demands money," Acting Police Chief Allen Banks said in a press conference Monday night.

Banks said an APD officer got to the scene as the suspect then tried to carjack a man.

"The guy is armed with a firearm, the officer does arrive on scene, he does confront the subject and our officer does discharge the firearm," Banks said. "Reports at this point are preliminary. All witnesses have not been interviewed and our officer has not been interviewed."

Another crime scene and again the same question: Why?

"Identification on this subject or offender, we do not have at this time. We're hoping to get that here soon and look into his background and to find out again why he's walking on the street with firearm, threatening citizens of Albuquerque," Banks said.

The suspect is in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The officer was not hurt. He is not being named.

Emergency responders were called back to the scene Monday evening to treat the 7-year-old boy who was with his mom when she was robbed at gunpoint.

Police say the boy was terrified of what he witnessed--that he was shaking and needed medical help.

The boy's mom gave the man money. Police say neither she nor her son were hurt.
