Police have charged 34-year-old Joaquin Ortega with aggravated assault, robbery, aggravated assault on an officer and child abuse. They say he crashed a car into a pole Monday night before robbing a woman who was with a 7-year-old, threatening them both with a gun.

Next, police say he tried to carjack a man. That's when APD says an officer shot Ortega to stop him.

Today, Ortega is in the hospital. Soon, he'll be booked on charges including robbery and aggravated assault. But this isn't his first brush with crime.

Four years ago, Ortega was charged with DWI causing great bodily harm. Court documents say he fled the scene and that when they went to find him, they saw marijuana flushed down the toilet.

Before the DWI, he also got in trouble for using cocaine, meth and soboxine. After being busted for a felony, authorities say they found him with a gun-- and he was charged again.

Ortega will be booked on these charges after he is released from the hospital.

The officer who shot him wasn't hurt. His name isn't being released at this time.
