Halloween safety tips for trick-or-treaters

It might be the spookiest day of the year, but as we all know, Halloween is still supposed to be fun.

While kids are out having a good time, officials urge parents not to forget about safety.

The American Red Cross in New Mexico suggests parents take their kids trick-or-treating in groups. They also recommend taking a flash light.

If kids are going out with friends, officials say parents should make sure they stick with their group and also know where they're going, including the route and the community they're trick-or-treating in.

As you start going door to door, here are some other tips:

"When they're crossing the street, they need to be extra careful. They need to have flash lights or reflective tapes on them. Those are the biggest hazards," said Rahim Balsara with the American Red Cross in New Mexico.

For those passing out candy:

And for pumpkins outside: "You know, this is the change of season we also want to make sure that when people put candles out there, they don't put candles really. They should put glow sticks out there so they're really much safer than starting fires out there," Balsara said.
