A flamenco studio in downtown Albuquerque was destroyed in a massive fire on Wednesday evening.

Fire crews responded to the scene at 212 Gold Avenue SW around 4:25 p.m. At the scene, firefighters reported dark smoke shooting 40 feet into the air from the studio.

The occupants of the National Institute of Flamenco evacuated soon after noticing the smoke.

Firefighters tried to fight the fire from inside the building, but were pulled out due to the possibility of the roof collapsing. Once crews started battling the flames defensively from the outside, the roof caved in.

AFD spokeswoman Melissa Romero said the crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to the five surrounding businesses. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
