Police say an Albuquerque mother accused of causing her nine-year-old son’s death may have abused him before. Court documents paint an even grimmer picture, including a lengthy criminal history.
Synthia Varela-Casaus’ Faebook page is covered with photos of her kids and messages like “I love you my precious angels, you are mommy’s blessings.”
But police say Friday night, she kicked one of those children so hard he fell and hit his head twice, causing his death. A criminal complaint suggest previous abuse, noting cigarette burns and bruises on the child’s body.
A check of court records shows a broad range of criminal charges that raise questions about Varela-Casaus’ fitness as a parent. In 2007, she was charged with prostitution after a vice officer saw her offer a man sex for money. In 2009, she shoplifted from a Walgreens, then fled the scene.
Mug shots show her getting into trouble over the course of two decades. While police say she’s showed no remorse for her most recent run-in with law.
“On the drive down here, the only concern she had was how much her bond would be,” Albuquerque Police Department officer Simon Drobik said.
The new charge she faces – child abuse resulting in death – is her most serious yet.
There were two other children living in the home, both younger than the one who died. CYFD removed them.
