The New Mexico Department of Health has reported the first flu death of the 2013-2014 season in the state.

The department said a 76-year-old woman from Santa Fe County died from the flu.

"Please remember that the best way to protect yourself and the elderly form the flu is to get vaccinated," said Retta Ward, department of health cabinet secretary. "As flu activity increases in New Mexico, it's important for anyone who has not yet been vaccinated against the flu to contact their healthcare provider or pharmacist about getting a flu shot."

The health department says the predominant circulating flu strain in New Mexico is H1N1. The strain was first identified in 2009 and may cause severe illness, even in healthy young adults.
