ALBUQUERQUE -- The Albuquerque mother accused of kicking her 9-year-old son to death pleaded not guilty on Friday.

Synthia Varela-Casaus faces a number of charges, including child abuse resulting in death.

Varela-Casaus walked into the courtroom in handcuffs with her head down and appeared to be crying. Last month, Albuquerque police officials said Varela-Casaus kicked her son, Omaree Varela, hard enough to cause him to fall and hit his head. She reportedly told police that it was all an accident.

At her arraignment, the state told the judge that Varela-Casaus has a long list of felony arrests and that a $100,000 bond would be an appropriate amount.

A search of past records shows Varela-Casaus had a history of child services interventions; however, there were no open cases at the time of her son's death.

Varela-Casaus' two other children remain in custody of the state's Children, Youth and Families Department.
