Lovelace Women's Hospital's Breast Care Center recently received its recertification from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) with a perfect score. The certification gives the center a three-year full accreditation.

Hospitals that earn this recognition must demonstrate a commitment to multidisciplinary treatment for patients and they must meet strict standards of care. It is important to the NAPBC, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons, that breast care centers take a multidisciplinary team approach to patient treatment, which means that all physicians and providers involved with a patient communicate and are engaged in the entire treatment process. At Lovelace Women's Hospital, for example, providers meet weekly to discuss all aspects of patient care, including oncology, psychosocial issues, transportation, diet, genetics and plastic surgery.

To earn accreditation, the Lovelace Women's Hospital Breast Care Center had to meet or exceed quality standards established by the program as well as agree to an evaluation every three years. According to the NAPBC, accreditation is given only to centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest quality care in breast disease diagnosis and treatment, and that comply with the accreditation program standards. The NAPBC evaluates programs based on 17 components, such as imaging and pathology, and 27 standards, including community outreach, support, nursing, surgical care, treatment and research.
