At last – Denver is winning something good after the Broncos’ humiliating defeat in the Super Bowl. It comes straight from Albuquerque – a special shipment of red and green chile.

It all started when the mayor of Denver, in a moment of temporary insanity, bet a batch of his city’s “amazing” green chile stew against some kind of fish from Seattle. The only “amazing” thing about it to New Mexicans was the sheer audacity of Denver’s failed attempt to hijack our native cuisine.

Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry packed up some hot stuff for Denver Mayor Michael  Hancock on Friday. It’s the real deal – fresh-frozen Hatch green chile and Chimayo red.

“We’re sending the mild green chile,” Berry said. “We’re not so sure if they’re used to some of this great New Mexico chile so we’ll send ‘em the mild. It’s kind of a gateway chile, if you will, and we’ll get ‘em started on that and when they think they’re ready we’ll send ‘em some of that good hot chile.”

The truth is, Peyton Manning could stagger through the streets of Denver, throwing footballs at every restaurant and rarely hit one that serves green chile. That’s not a slur on Peyton’s passing arm. It’s just that chile is rare in the Mile High City. Come to think of it, Albuquerque’s elevation is 5,280 feet or higher throughout much of the city. But Berry is concerned about Denver.

“We’re also going to make sure they get cookbooks,” Berry said. “We probably ought to call their security department so they’ll know what the bag of red powder is, but we’re not sure they will know how to use it so we’re going to make sure they get some recipes as well.”

It’s on the way, Denver – with deepest sympathy for your loss.

Mayor Berry says he is planning to issue a chile challenge to Denver – some kind of chile championship cookoff thing that would benefit charities. And yes, he’s sending a chile package to Seattle, too. After all they did win the game. Some say Denver should have bet a bale of marijuana against Seattle, but, hey – it’s legal  up there in Washington, too.
