Valencia County deputies are trying to figure out why a 15-year-old would kill his 12-year-old friend. Deputies say Brandon Villalobos killed Alex Madrid sometime Tuesday in a field in Meadow Lake. New Mexico law says no one under fourteen can be tried as an adult, but the suspect here is fifteen, putting the case in a gray area.
Los Lunas Public Schools officials said students had a tough time dealing with the news.
“There's just no learning going on today, they're so emotional, that they need to provide some kind of services to try to get them back on track,” Director of Safety and Security Desi Garcia said.
They placed grief counselors at schools, trying to help students work through their pain and questions. Meanwhile, Valencia County deputies worked to answer questions of their own about a murder they say happened in a field in Meadow Lake.
Those questions include how, when and why 15-year-old Brandon Villalobos killed 12-year-old Alex Madrid, what weapon or weapons were used, and what challenges will come with charging a minor.
“That'll be up to the district attorney’s office and the investigators will be working with the DA's office to determine that,” Valencia County Sheriff Louis Burkhard said.
The office says the boys were friends, that the victim’s mother knew they were hanging out, and that they believe Villalobos acted alone.
