SANTA FE (AP) - Workers at the pet shelter in northern New Mexico are reeling from the theft of 400 pounds of dog food.
According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, the food was stolen from a locked shed at the Espanola Valley Humane Society overnight Wednesday.
It's the second such theft from the shelter, which put a better lock on the shed containing the food after someone stole about 1,000 pounds of dog food several months ago.
Shelter spokeswoman Megan Sharkey says the dollar cost of the latest loss could be up to $1,200, and she says the theft may endanger a program that provides dog food to needy families.
She says the 29 dogs at the shelter had enough to eat Thursday and that residents already have started donating food.
