Albuquerque Police released lapel camera video showing that an officer shot at a man several times as he ran away and tossed a handgun.
Before the shooting in late October, officers said Joaquin Ortega tried to carjack drivers after he crashed a car near Central Avenue and Washington Street. 911 callers reported that Ortega had been driving erratically, running drivers off the road, and firing his own weapon from the vehicle.
Initially, then Interim-Chief Allen Banks would not release any more than a single frame of lapel camera video. He was combative and defensive when reporters asked why.
“I’m going to do things my way,” Banks said at the time.
Although Ortega never pointed his gun at officers, APD said Officer Brian Pitzer was justified in opening fire since Ortega was a perceived threat.
