In southern Colorado the search is on for a missing snowmobiler after he was buried in an avalanche Wednesday.

Undersheriff Lynda Carter said, “The only thing we were able to find yesterday was the actual sled, and it was buried in about 8 to 10 feet of snow.”

Robert Yates was snowmobiling with four others when the mountain of snow came crashing down on them. Those four were able to dig out.

“These guys were  absolutely prepared,” said Undersheriff Carter, “The majority of them had avalanche beacons, they were equipped with parachutes and air bags.”

Carter says helicopters and ground teams have been working all day to find Yates.

“It’s such a remote area, it’s about 20 miles in the back country.”

And their getting help from some of the snowmobilers who made it out.

But the snow is not making it easy.

“Right now we have several layers of snow and none of them are really bonded together, so right now it is very easy for a top layer to break off. Or a few top layers to break off,” Carter said.

For now, friends and family are all hoping for the best outcome.
