San Juan county's economy is on the rebound. New jobs springing up every day.
“There are a lot of manufacturing jobs out there, a lot of truck driving jobs,” said Ray Hagerman with Four Corners Economic Development.
Good news right? Well Hagerman says there's not a workforce capable of filling those jobs.
“We are finding that there ate least 6-700 jobs out there that are decent jobs,” said Hagerman.
The problem is that a lot of people living in San Juan County don't have the necessary skills.
“It’s a hard thing for us in this area we have people that need jobs, but the jobs they can qualify for, there isn’t a connect,’ according to Hagerman.
Just ask Jose Angeles. He says changing careers is very scary, “By doing so, you take time off work because I wanted to do this full time to get it done as quick as possible.”
Angeles has been out of work since 2012 and moved to San Juan County from California.
“I didn’t want to just sit on my butt, I wanted to do something so I decided to go back to school and begin another career”
And now Angeles is working on what he needs to become a potential job candidate. He says that being jobless for two years has hurt.
“Once I graduate, I hope to make that income back.”
Until then he is glad for the training and the promise of a bright future.
