The Roswell Zoo was evacuated Thursday after a bear cub escaped from its cage.

"We had one of those exciting things that happen when you work at a zoo.  We had the baby bear figure out a way to get on the roof," said Spring River Zoo Director Elaine Mayfield.

Mayfield says zookeepers who were filling up the exhibit’s moat accidentally left the water running in the exhibit.

“Evidently it didn't quite shut off and was slowly filled all day," said Mayfield.

So, the water rose high enough for the bear to make its escape.

The bear swam across the moat, then climbed up the front of the exhibit’s cage to get on the roof.

Once on the roof, the cub was busy.

“The bear was running around on the roof, on the edges of the roof, all the way back and forth," said Mayfield.

Zoo officials called New Mexico Game and Fish.

They were able to coax the bear back into its’ cage.

The zoo re-opened after an hour.

Mayfield says they’re not going to let it happen again.

“Needless to say the water is much lower now," said Mayfield.
