A hearing held Friday afternoon in Roswell ruled 12-year-old Mason Campbell is capable of understanding the charges against him as well as the subsequent consequences.

Police say Campbell shot 12-year-old Natanial Tavarez and 13-year-old Kendal Sanders in the gym at Berrendo Middle School in January.

Both victims are currently recovering.

Campbell's attorney is hoping to avoid a trial. If the case does go to trial, it will begin on June 16.

The next court hearing is scheduled for April 29.

Campbell's family requested that Campbell be kept in a juvenile detention facility near Roswell where he is currently staying. Prosecutors countered that the facility is crowded and that Campbell has had conflicts with others at the facility.

Judge Freddie Romero ruled that Campbell is to be transfered to a facility in Bernalillo County.
